Original description stated it was attached to a small milling machine. The tag's serial number was probably used for inventory control.

Hello, Badger...
I happen to have one of these Elgin-Hardinge Mills.
They were used by Saginaw Steering Gear {GM] in 1943 in the manufacture of M1
Carbines.

I noticed your machine is a lower serial number and it looks like one of the mounting studs broke off and it had to be reattached. Very nice, I like the older machinery. I sold my 1949 Walker-Turner drill press in Sept because I didn't want to move it. Still regretting that sale.

Thankfully I was wrong about seeing another one like it. The milling machine is a very cool piece of WWII history. Also glad the IP plate will now be preserved by those who appreciate it.
