I think the serial numbers were a continuation of where they were in production vs a new series from 1.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. I will accept PayPal, Zelle, MO and good old checks (and cash if you want to stop by for a tour!). CLICK BANNER to send me a PM for International pricing and shipping. Perhaps the serial number sequence started at 1000. Some countries did not want anyone to calculate how many rifles they had. During WWI the Germans with their GEWicon 98 used a 4 digit system. I do not know where they stated but I believe that they started with 1000. The first 10000 started with 1000a and ended with 9999a, then the next sequence started at 1000b to 9999b, etc.

Why couldn't it be assembled with Rem. 30, M1917, P14 parts? You are not going to create an original 1934 out of it but you could get it shooting again. It could make a sporter or a fake 1934 as all the parts swapped military rifles are.
