I went and had a look at the Bren at War series, good stuff there as well. I see in one picture a soldier with his SMLE up to his LEFT shoulder - looks like it might have happened after all.
(I can recall a thread, not sure where, in which this topic was discussed; the consensus seemed to be that it was impossible and contrary to training.)

Picture #2, photos #1 and #4 in it are trials rifles as you can see the cut off's.

Shooting from the left shoulder was a perfectly acceptable alternative for those cack-handed shooters. Alas, not such a bag of fun with the L85 rifle!

Not much fun with an SLR, either.
Saw one clip on youtube, where a bloke was using a 7.62 x 39 Bren, from the left shoulder - would have thought it was awkward to use the sights
