1903 Bolt Number

Finally got another look at this gun the other day.

Serial Number 1384xxx
barrel is marked near the front sight 5-3
Stock is marked on the bottom near the trigger guard with an "S"
I could find no marks on the bolt

Your SN should have a 1931 barrel date 5-31? The bolt should be marked 7 on the top of the bolt handle and N.S. steel lot code. So it probably had the bolt replaced. It is not a NM rifle and will make a good shooter if the bore is in good shape. If it's a prewar type C stock it should have a batch number on it. If it has a standard stock the value would be in the 700 range IMHO.

How do you identify the pre-war type "C" stock? This stock has an "S" in a circle stamped on the bottom of the stock. What dose the 5-3 at the end of the barrel indicate? There is also an "S" at the top of the barrel near the front sight.

There is no such thing as a 5-3 dated barrel. I suspect it is a 5-31 barrel which means it was made in May 1931. There is no such thing to my knowledge as a circle S barrel. The proof cartouche was a circle P applied on the under side of the stock aft of the triggerguard. You need to post pictures of these markings and one of the entire rifle. Actually there is a "circle S" 1903 barrel - they were made by Sedgely during WWII, but obviously, wouldn't apply in this case.
