Expensive ammo? An alternative.
It shoots .22 LR. That's because the action is a Ruger 10/22. This project was inspired by a 2004 Shooting Times article. When I first fired it it reminded me exactly of the regular M1
Carbine, a little less recoil and report though. The stock pouch holds 2 10 round magazines in which both the followers and springs were removed. Now each Mag holds 45 .22 LR shells and is capped with a rubber magazine cap to keep them from spilling out, these combined with the 10 rounds in the modified 10/22 mag equals 100 rounds. In the pic of the three carbines, the Ruger/M1 is at the top. It has been a fun Winter project.
Chuck.

Very nice, Chuck! I can see where that took some work, but I like the results. Well done!

Yeah, biut I reload using cast bullets and my cost is about the same as .22 RF cartridges.....
When they tell you to behave, they always forget to specify whether to behave well or badly!

To secure the handguard, I removed the four rivets/clip and then drilled down through the rear left hole and secured the handguard with a long thin sheet metal screw, the head of which sits in the hole.
