Kapyong Day!
And a "Happy Kapyong Day" to one and all.
Kapyong - Australian Army
Just to get folks warmed up for the Centenary of ANZAC Day; rum and milk optional, milk especially so.....as for the rum? You haven't lived 'til you have washed down bacon and eggs with a decent belt of neat, overproof, Bundaberg Rum before the sun comes up! (This practice is known locally as a "Gunfire Breakfast")
For those wanting more, (anniversaries, not rum), the following day (26th) marks:
50th of the "start" of Viet Nam war,
150th of the US Civil War Battle of Selma.
Any more out there?

Informative! Surprised I hadn't heard of this holding action before. Prolly 'cuz the US wasn't "saving the world" alongside.

The US WAS involved, the 2 PPCLI, 3 RAR and A Company, 72nd Heavy Tank Battalion were all subsequently awarded the US Presidential Unit Citation for their actions during the Battle of Kapyong. There were other sub units involved from the US. My early days in the PPCLI had me knowing men that had been there and my trip to 8/9 RAR had me meet a man that had been there with the RAR...
I know this is Wiki, but the gist of the story is correct. Battle of Kapyong - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maybe I misread this, but why the dig against the US?

I don't think that Kapyong day featured in the UK
anniversary celebrations for the UK Military. Mind you our contributory Regiment, the Middlesex Regt doesn't exist any more. Thinking about it......, neither does the actual County of Middlesex exist any more except in the 50's history books

Peter, this was a very interesting action, enemy numbers were so great, Ozzie snipers were using their HT's in a rapid fire mode, real footage exists of this action and was recently aired in a documentary series called "Following in their Footsteps"
