    The 8C serial number coincides with the early MkI without "*" -- estimated date April-May 1942 -- very early production.

    The "*" series didn't begin until the next month with the 13C serial numbers. Sporters were often special selection rifles, so you probably have a good one to restore. You are fortunate the hacksaw never lopped off the first two inches of the muzzle, making restoration easy. Good luck.
