The WW1 unit was The Civil Services Rifles. I don't know what is on the other side of the medal, because I have only seen the photo too, but have asked that question of my friend.
I did an extensive online search and the only other thing I found was a picture of a spoon that contained the same crossed rifle design - some shooting competition prize? Attachment 63203
I won many a "Shooting Spoon" when we were still allowed target shooting competitions this country. So I stick to my original comment that is it is a civilian shooting trophy.
