I think if you load your own and use a proper sandbag, you'll get a firm hold on this badboy...nice looking rig. I'd love to try it out. The rig goes on instead of irons? Uses a set screw to stabilize?

Yep. Remove the rear sight and the mount fits down into the pocket. A machine screw on each side centers it using the bevel cut in the sight ears. Some elevation adjustment is provided via a set screw at the front of the mount where it contacts the receiver ring. Then there's a big set screw at the rear that puts tension on the mount. Give it a try. I think you'll like it.

8 hundred thousand number SA? Is that a lead annealed heel? The scope makes it look about right too, almost. I have a 3 Mil here in .308 I'd love to try that with. Any grief trying to get the en blocks in?

A bit newer than that, but not by much. 1,08xxxx SA. Dec '42 IIRC.

With the CASM mount you have to replace the op rod catch with a modified version that prevents the clip from being ejected with the last round. Just insert an empty clip before installing the mount and load the magazine one round at a time. Go to The Holbrook Device for the M1 Garand, M1 Thumbsaver, John Holbrook to see the modded op rod catch. If you have a spare it would be a simple task to do the mods yourself.

Yeah, modern optics on antique rifles just don't look right IMO. Hope it can stand up to the recoil. Would've liked to put a Lyman Alaskan on it but waited too long to get one. The prices are nuts nowadays due to the popularity of the Vintage Sniper matches. At present they go for $350-$500 at auction. I can remember a time not so long ago when you could hardly give them away. Pretty much the same thing happened with 97 Winchesters when CAS caught on.

Have not encountered that mount before. But similar in concept to an older, smaller mount that's no longer available:

It's main drama was the occasional loosening of the "slop takeup" set screws, but a wee bit of Loctite sorted that worry. Wouldn't do for a conventional scope set-up, but it's been useful!
