Why not just look through a reloading book and work by process of elimination? Start by finding out what's available and then figure out which one does what you want?

I use three. Unique, Bullseye and Win 231. I've bought them at gunshows for years and have scads around...each seems to do what the others will, except for the M1 carbine. For that I used IMR 4227.

Yeah, pretty much. The hell of it is they're all scarcer than match grade buckshot around here.

I knew the stuff I was buying would come in handy...

I too like Unique powder. I use it from handguns to cast loads in all my milsurps. Red dot is another that works for me in the cast loads. I had the chance and picked up a bunch of SR 7625 that will work for both handguns and cast loads in rifles.

hey all me again !!! bill if I try and find a new powder to replace unique with and also easy to get yet !! what would be possibly the first item to look for or : the relative burn rate ? feet per sec ? or cup pressure ? or just go one above or one below the burn rate of unique ? it that is possible ??? thanks bill

It's not only the burn rate that affects performance. Powder composition and granule form also have a potential influence. In general, double-base powders' nitroglycerin content helps promote easy ignition and burning at low load density and pressure, while increasing flame temperature and consequent erosion at higher pressure. Also, flake-type granules are easier to ignite and burn than denser tubular and spherical shapes.
If you like Unique, consider similar Alliant powders (double-base and "flake" geometry) in the medium-fast range. In order from a little faster to somewhat slower these include:
Green Dot
(Unique)
Power Pistol
Herco
Blue Dot
(Alliant BE-96 and 20/28 are newer powders in the same range and could be worth trying if available.)
All these are slower than normally needed in light to moderate handgun loads where Bullseye, 231, Red Dot, 700X, and similar quick-burners are usually more efficient and cost-effective.
