modified SMLE MkIII fore-end
Just going through my old fore-ends looking for a donor for a SMLE MkI*** restoration when i found this one.
Its a fore-end that was originally machined for the long range "Volley Sights" but has had been Patched & modified to have the front volley cut-out removed and to give a smooth contour.
The rear sight protector cut out has also been patched as well and one side of the dovetail patch has a double stepped dovetail
Could this possibly be an Armourers Test piece as the work does look very professional and there would have been loads of suitable fore-ends available at that time that didn't need modifying.

VERY probably a former trade test piece. We used to patch woodwork in all manner of places and far in excess of what would normally be allowed for trade tests and just general practice. Still have some bits and pieces!

That one will still do for a rifle though...
