You will have to modify the bolt and FCG to semi auto only. The barrel will need a tube welded to it to make it over 16" or you will have to SBR it ($200 tax stamp). IIRC, a US made trigger, sear and discon are needed for 922(r).

I just welded it together.

What are the legalities of this. I read one guy say it's a serious offense yet most others say its fine but there is some sort of block which must be welded in place. I personally don't have the skills to weld it together but could probably find someone who could. They sell jigs but they are almost as much as a new receiver if they are in stock. I watched a demilled one sell on Gunbroker today for $325 that looked pretty nice. Since I put on displays, something like that would be fine for me. Said he removed the sear and drilled out the firing pin. Doesn't seem like that would be enough to me, original receiver as far as I could tell. Looked like the weld marks were slightly different color.

9. May I lawfully make a firearm for my own personal use, provided it is not being made for resale?

Firearms may be lawfully made by persons who do not hold a manufacturer’s license under the GCA provided they are not for sale or distribution and the maker is not prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms. However, a person is prohibited from assembling a non-sporting semiautomatic rifle or shotgun from 10 or more imported parts, as set forth in regulations in 27 C.F.R. 478.39. In addition, the making of an NFA firearm requires a tax payment and advance approval by ATF. An application to make a machinegun will not be approved unless documentation is submitted showing that the firearm is being made for the official use of a Federal, State, or local government agency (18 U.S.C. § 922(o),(r); 26 U.S.C. § 5822; 27 C.F.R. §§ 478.39, 479.62, and 479.105).

The HellBox receiver tube I got has a reduced ID (inside diameter), so an unaltered full-auto bolt will not fit into it. I have seen TNW receivers that are also reduced ID. I don’t know if the one on GB is.

A blocking bar or blocking pins is another option to the reduced ID receiver. It needs to made so it cannot be converted easily to full-auto.

Another requirement is the gun has to be semi-auto only and fire from a closed bolt. That means the bolt had to be converted to take a semi-auto firing pin. The Suomi bolts are very hard and have to be annealed (softened) before they can be modified to semi-auto. I bought a bolt that was already modified to semi-auto and turned down to fit the reduced receiver tube.

It must have a 16” or longer barrel, or you can get a tax stamp for an SBR ($200 to the ATF). Most people weld a tube onto the barrel to make it over 16”.

The FCG must be semi-auto only.

I gathered all the semi-auto parts up because I didn’t have a lathe or milling machine at the time. I used a Dremel tool to cut the ports in the HB tube and welded FCG side plates, mag well to the tube.

As long as you follow the laws it’s legal to build your own guns here in Texas. I don’t know about your State.

There are thousands of gun builds on Weapons Guild. There is also a section for legal questions. There are vendors who sell the parts needed to make semi-auto a Suomi and there is a section specifically for Suomi builds. It is the best resource I know of if you want to put a Suomi together. I think you have to register before you can enter the forums.

The TNW Suomis come up on the auction sites if you just want to buy one. They have an extended barrel shroud that makes it even heavier.

I can't access Weapons Guild, something is messed up with their application process. You can build your own guns in PA so that's not an issue. I'd like to get a new bolt but can't find one for sale anywhere. Receivers are available and I'm tempted to get one and set it aside.
