When we had the A1, it was standard practice to tape the fore end to stop the fore end top cover from unlatching itself and flapping about in the wind, getting caught up on your webbing/combat jacket pocket/vehicle cam net or passing trolley busses.
Peter's right, the A2 is a big improvement, I've yet to see bits falling off it, while the A1 was infamous for shedding its small parts.
