Either one wouldn't surprise me...in the 90s I recall hearing of late production M1icon Garands that were found still wrapped in grease paper in US Army stock (though those went to a better fate, being auctioned for the CMPicon instead of chopped).

Likewise, I've been told that there were brand new L1A1s on the rack at Lithgowicon Arsenal, that were cut into parts kits when Lithgow was bought out lock, stock and barrel in the early 90s.
