Aussie, are you sure the S stands for "small arms"? Would the Germans have used a phrase in English to describe an item? I don't know of a German
word that would equate to "small arms" beginning with "S".
Or could it be a categorisation code they were forced to use from the treaty of Versailes, hence the English designation?
