Shipping A No 32 MK1 scope to England from Canada

I've got a No32 MK1 scope in need of repair and I am potentially going to send it across the pond from Canada to England. Does anybody here know if there are export/import hurdles I have to deal with, or do I just box it up, insure it and send it off?

Surely........ Best people to ask are the Canadian customs! There are certain legal 'tricks of the trade' if it's going to be returned within a certain period

When I sent mine out of the country for repair I wrote specifically on the customs form: "Antique scope sent for repair and return".

There should be no hassles as long as it's declared as jimmiez states above. Take heed of Peter's advice and ask Canada Customs anyhow so that they don't tax you for the value of the scope upon it's return.

Personally, I wouldn't describe it as a rifle scope but I would describe it as a telescope or scientific instrument. Post number 5 also seems like a sensible suggestion.

The description is often important because certain flags are raised by certain words. Anything that says "Antique British Telescope" will probably not raise the eyebrows of a zealous customs inspector (think of Inspector Jervais in Les Miserables -- I've encountered people like this).

However, if you said "Military Sniper Scope" you will probably encounter a immense scrutiny as a possible weapons peddler.

You've got to clear both Canadian and UK customs, which are two hurdles of a different breed.

You've done the right thing asking the questions in advance before falling into a trap you did not anticipate.

So long as you're not breaking any laws in keeping quiet I would always avoid mentioning that the scope is firearm related. It's just looking for trouble. I usually refer to items as 'small old telescope', or 'reproduction small telescope brackets' (for scope mounts). No word of a lie, & no 'F' word used either.

There was a similar thread to this last year with a visitor trying to take a rifle scope out of the country in his luggage. He tried to give an accurate description of it but airport security became a little "excited" when they noticed the word rifle in the description. It may be worth looking at the thread.
