Try some standard velocity 40 grain ammo if you can find it and the groups will shrink even more. I shoot Fiocchi Super Match and it's excellent in all of the trainers from the Long P'14 to the No.8Mk.1.

Thanks for the advice, Brian. I'll try to locate some and give it a try.

Thanks for the advice about that ammo Brian. I've not tried that type yet. I'll try and get some for testing.
I currently require 2 different types of ammo for my No8's. One shoots well with either T22 or Geco and it was rubbish with the Eley Team; however the second rifle loves the Eley.
My No2MkIV Lithgow
is less fussy; but also good with the Eley Team ammo, but generally a couple of points behind the No8.
As our Federation have just reduced the diameter size of targets for small bore military trainers by 50%; the group size is now really critical. The 10 is now 25mm (1") at 50 metres; it was 5cm (2")

Yikes! That's quite a leap in diameter size reduction!

I like T22 when I can find it. The German
manufacture Wolf Match target is great too but scarce over here. Aguila, (Mexico), has a reasonably priced match load too but haven't gotten my hands on any yet to try.

Have you found that similar type rifles (No8's for example) have different ammo requirements? This is the case with my two; I assume its down to the wear after thousands of rounds. Although one has the barrel floated all the way and the other has the correct up pressure; both are equally accurate with their preferred ammo.
The Eley Match load is about 30% more expensive than the Eley Team; but it is basically the same ammo. The Team ammo is the batch that falls outside the Match velocity spec. Luckily they print the speed on the box, so when it's a good batch, just a few feet per second outside the Match spec; it's good value.

Sure, sometimes you have to sit down with several brands and each rifle to get the absolute best result with a particular barrel and ammo.
