One would like it is training as that looks a fairly exposed position to be firing so many rounds especially if the enemy is entrenched in the tree line would make target definition very hard among the foliage and shadows.

The "flap" is best used in the prone position when on FA fire.

That is a Stabilizer Assembly. It slides over the flash hider and clamps on behind the bayonet lug.

these were originally designed for a full auto application, but do they really do a good job of taming recoil and muzzle rise during semi-auto rapid fire

That's right. It's really just a muzzle brake that has smaller holes on the top and larger toward the bottom sides.
