A link to Buccaneer's fine photo spread:
L42 A1 Don't judge a book by it's cover
ETA: So far, it's the first stepped barrel L42a1 variant shown in this or any of the linked theads to date.

Ok so on a sweltering Sunday in Blighty... came across this picture which I've never seen before. It's from the 1970s in Oman and is different to that other SAS one which has been shown many times here (the chap with the L42 resting on his knees). Anyway, it was part of a display at the Shirehall in Hereford for Armed Forces Day. If it's been posted many times before then I apologise!

Nice to see that he's holding the fore-end as it should be held. Gripping it, fingers around it and not sat in the hand like a wuss.........

Browsing a Falklands War Picture group today I found these gems, all taken during the Falklands conflict. The narrative for the last one includes comments about members of the SBS in the photo. You will note there is an SLR with a scope, and also a civilian sporting rifle scoped up, rather than an L42. All photos are on Facebook Group Falklands War Pics and is an open group.

I would be willing to bet that that scoped L1A1 has an Argy FAL scope mounted on it.
There are numerous photos of Argy FALs scoped with the Ziess Zielvar scope and turret munts off their m1909 mauser snipers.
from the photos it appears that they simply welded the turret rings to FAL top covers.
The (original??) caption for this photo said:
Caption:
An Argentinian infantryman with a 7.62 mm FN FAL rifle mounted with a telescopic scope. The Argentinian army had no real sniper program, so was forced to improvise when the Falklands War broke out. The luckier ones were issued Remington 700s.

And from all the scars on the rocks around one can see this is a "sangar" shot.
Looks like one of the Argentine
FALs with Zeiss Zielvier at the right front of the photo, No32 and Zielvier : old foes meet again in the Falklands for a forty year reunion! Proving once again that "obsolete" equipment is better than none at all.

Some good photos in bigduke6's thread:
https://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=57648
This one has FTR markings, don't know if they were applied whilst in No.4 Mk.1(T) config. or L42a1.
ETA: This rifle was one of the first converted as an XL42E1, then later reworked to L42a1 standards.
