Stevens Model 520 trench gun questions

I have the information in a 3 ring binder along with Remington contracts from early 1941 to the early 1970'S WW2 contracts for Ithaca and WW1& WW2 Winchester contracts and info on the Winchester 1200 & the Steven's 77E have copies of the milspec original blue prints for the handguard sling swivel screws and other small parts been collecting military shotguns since the mid 70'S thought if I have the guns collect everything else that goes with them pouches ammo manuals cleaning gear tools etc.I even found an original head space gauge for military shotguns as shown in the manual and one of these days it will be time to unload it because you can't take it with

JJM, what about the punch marks found on some 520 trench gun barrels and receivers? I thought the punch marks are maybe hardness tests whereas the extra P proofs marks are because the gun had to be re-proofed.

By the way JJM, are you Jeff by any chance, the diehard Buckeye fan? :-)

Tom that is what I was told the punch mark was for hardness test and the P was the proof mark for the hardness test I have a Wards Western Field with the P. and the standard U.S. marks I have owned that gun for around forty years it's a model 30 (520-30) riot gun

Very interesting. I wonder how that accounts for the mix of "P" "P." and "." marks that appear throughout this range. I know that Stevens used the "P" stamps on the tops of the barrels and receivers on the Vietnam era Model 77Es as an acceptance proof stamp, or was it hardness as well?

If you don't mind relaying your serial number, I'd like to include your mixed mark Ward's riot gun in my survey of Stevens 520/620 serial numbers and characteristics. I'm matching serial numbers to known design changes in order to accurately date all these shotguns. JJM, glad to see you on the Forum. For you guys who don't know, JJM is a wealth of information on U.S. Military shotguns.

So I'm clear on this, the punch marks are hardness test. And the P marks are re-proofs after the hardness test or are they also hardness tests?

I have a 520 with only the extra P proofs on top of the barrel and receiver but no punch marks.
