German K98
in a Spanish stock by all appearances. Not a good combo.

How about treating it to a replacement surplus stock set? They seem to be in reasonably plentiful supply here in the U.K. at the moment. I don't know what it's like in the States?

Thanks for the answer everyone. I will be looking for a better stock. The rifle shoots really well as is but I agree it's not a good combo. It seems they are plentiful in Europe but finding ones that ship to the US is difficult.
thanks again.

The 98k has an integral handguard ring at the front of the rear sight base. Like this---

To fit the long handguard as is shown in your photos, one of two things has to be true.
1.A relief cut has been made in the long guard to hide the retaining ring inside it.
2.The retaining ring has been ground off.
Before you spend money on a replacement stock set, you would want to find out if the answer is "2.". Any restoration from that point would require a replacement front sight base.
