Great thread on this post. I picked up an M1 Carbine long time ago. A friend that served in NV in connection with light observation planes remarked he was issued an M1 Carbine and soon the new people got M16s. He got the M16icon and considered it a needed upgrade. I would take my cheap Chinese SKS. I love my M1 Carbine and have great respect for the .223 but after seeing the penetration of the 7.62x39 combined with the accuracy and durability, my SKS Would be ready. Handgun? A .45 ACP or .357 with 125 Grain hollow point. Tilt to a .45 with enough clips. This was reinforced by getting a neighbor for about a year, a young solder sent home from Iraq after 2 tours in urban settings. First thing he did was get a .45 when he got home. He is a great kid, served bravely and gave specific chilling reasons. All being said, the first consideration for me is anything you can shoot well and know like the back of your hand.
So if I had to, my poor looking Swede M38 and my Astra 600/43 would work fine for me.
