What would cause this failure to feed?
It seems like the brass case is catching on something around the barrel, but the entire circumference is smooth and clean. Any thoughts? The same thing happens on every round when fed manually, it functions about 1/2 the time when firing. Same problem with different mags and various ammo. It appears to be a correct barrel for the receiver (USGI WWII rebuild) and seems to be in good condition. More photos of the rifle can be seen in my other recent thread here:

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Bob

Perhaps the chamber needs a bit of paper polishing on a mandrel? Perhaps the mag catch is allowing the mag to sag down? Hand feeding is never a good measure of how a weapon works though. Try holding the mag up when operating or firing. See if that sorts it out?

Jim,
Thanks for the quick response, headed to the range now and I'll let you know how I do. I'll see if I can figure out how to adjust the mag catch.
Sincerely,
Bob

Mag catch is adjusted by replacing it.

I wonder if he used the same Mag checking the other rounds. When that happened to mine I had a backwards spring. But first I used another Mag and it fed properly so I opened up both of them and the one that cause that problem the spring was backwards.

Still does no feed correctly. I've tried various mags and all the mags appear to be assembled correctly and do seat the same as the other carbines I have. Since this is a rebuilt carbine it has been reparkerized and I am guessing the polishing is the correct path to repair as Jim noted. I have 600 grit sandpaper and fitz metal polish but before I move forward I am wondering:
1) where do I polish
2) what grit should I start with
I am thinking that a very light touch with the 600 to remove the parkerizing and then polish with the fitz and dremel tool. Is that correct?

If polishing, you need to spin for the best result. That would be a slotted end rod, very thin in a drill chuck. Oil and 600 paper at low speed for a few seconds to under a minute. Then clean and check. You'll be working from the rear of a stripped carbine receiver. You almost need a flexible shaft like a hone shaft. In and out doesn't work as evenly.

Have you checked the recoil spring. A good USGI spring should be 10.25" long. 10" or less it is too worn. Worn recoil springs cause numerous feed issues.
