    Unhappy No 5 handguard dimensions

    Hello all,
I'm in the process of rebuilding a No5 that had been tastefully sporterized and rebarrelled to 303/22. I've got all the metal bits and the butt stock to rebuild and I've decided to go down the path of reworking No4 timbers to fit but am looking for dimensions for the hand guard, overall length, length from ring end to band and front and rear width. Is anyone able to assist, Thanks.
    Bob

What sort of No 4 fore-end will you be modifying?

I am pretty sure a No 4 rear handguard wont be long enough.

On a No 5 fore-end I have, the distance in the barrel channel from the front edge of the ring groove to the back edge of the band groove is 197.5mm. I don't have a genuine No 5 handguard.
There is enough length in a No 4 rear handguard to make a No 5 one.
I think a problem might lie in cutting the No 4 fore-end to No 5 length - depending upon the make of fore-end, the lightening grooves can leave an open end when rounded off. This seems to be part of the reason that the Numrich repros don't quite match a genuine No 5 stock.

First photo No 5 stock beside No 4 stock with lightening grooves highlighted. Cutting a No 4 stock to No 5 length will usually leave an open hole at the end where the groove is cut through. There might be some No 4 stocks with a different groove arrangement that don't have this issue.

Second and third photos comparison between a Numrich modified No 4 stock (top) and No 5 one. The Numrich stock has been cut off short to avoid straying into the next lightening cut forward in the original No 4 stock.

Fourth photo comparison between Numrich "No 5" handguard and standard No 4 one. The Numrich handguard would be about 5mm longer than a No 5 one, I think.

    Hello,

I just pulled apart two of my No.5s, and here is what I came up with

(all measurements taken from the rear of the handguard)

    overall length=225.42mm

length to the barrel band groove=201.61mm

    barrel band groove=11.11mm

remainder, from front of groove cut to front of handguard=12.7mm

Handguard manufacturers were both Fazakerly (F) and BSA (M47A).

Best of luck with the project.

The No4 type modified fore-ends for the No5's we used to get through Ordnance could be identified by the square wood patch inserted into the formerly open lightening groove of the No4 fore-end. Over timne this was almost invisible. Same as the converted No4 butts. The little insert for the sling swivel plate was there but barely visible.

It is the most simple job to convert No4 butts, f/ends and handguards to No5 spec

Thanks, Peter. That´s what I did, except for the buttstock (I already had a longer one). Think the forend need a bit of slimming down as well.

You're right Villiers. It does need a small bit of titivating but the whole job for the complete wood set will take no more than about 1.5 hours or so.
