I think that the "bespoke"/non standard uniforms of Montgomery, Patton and others were also partly an attempt at morale boosting in Wartime to a certain extent. When we look back on it today some of the outfits worn by Churchill, perhaps, look almost comical but I think his intentions were an attempt to boost morale.

Daan, those are all good points, and I too doubt the first (horseback) photo is actually Baden-Powell. I also doubt it was taken during the Boer War and wonder if it wasn't taken in North America (

I can only say it was a large format Colliers (USA) volume on the Boer War, printed during or very soon after the war. The photo may well have been taken earlier of course as B-P was involved in Southern Africa for some years I believe.
