I remember as kid when my father was stationed in Germanyin 1959, Mannheim was still in ruins from the Allied bombing. Same for Berlin especially Berlin looking over the Wall and seeing the skyline of bombed out buildings. Many of the buildings on the East German side were false fronts. That was my first exposure to total war and destruction. The most telling sight was at night from the West Berlin Radio tower. If you out over the city at night you can make out the outline of West Berlin from the flashing neon lights. Everything on the East side was a monotone reddish vapor lights.
