Can you guys help me find out what I have.
So I just recently got a Mauser, I believe it to be a FN made in 1950 but only been able to find two of its marks. It has an E L G with a star underneath with a circle around it with a crown placed on top (definitive black powder proof mark) or from what I can find that is what it is. Then a -->>> (view mark???) a two k's with a star on top of them. Can't find out what the K means. It is serial number 06649 matching for the barrel and receiver, with a columbian military crest on the receiver. Can someone help me figure out if this thing is safe to shoot commercial 30 06 loads or not first old rifle I've bought and I'd rather be safe then sorry. I will try to post pictures in the following post but my camera is horrid so I am gonna have to try and hunt one down.

Hopefully this helps. Those can be hit or miss in finish and /or function from the few I've played with. That said, I am no expert like others on this forum. Get some pics posted as that helps a ton.

The ELG mark you describe sounds like a LGE Leige/Belgian proof mark and if it's been proofed for Columbian 30-06, then it's proofed for 30-06 - period! But having been PROOFED doesn't mean it is SAFE. It just means that it was proved safe ON THAT DAY in my opinion. Others may differ of course. Get it looked at by a safe and competent Mauser orientated gunsmith is what I'd say simply because nobody here can inspect it and pass a judgement.

Well, even without pics you could at least have said clearly whether it is a k or a K. Star over K would be the inspector's code for
Delsaux Walthere
- active as inspector/controller in Liege from 1929 - 1968
Which covers the period, but doesn't help to narrow it down!
Beg, borrow or buy a usable camera and post PICTURES so that we can help!
For instance: a small k alone could be a date stamp for 1932.
If the k is underlined it is 1972.
If a capital K, then the date is 1993.
- All useless in this case, but it shows why we need PICTURES:

Looks like a nice Columbian mauser, nice to shoot but a bit hard on the shoulder, a full length shot would help to identify Rifle or Short Rifle.

Double broach cut receiver, so it's probably a FN M1950 Short Rifle Mauser.
