Seeing as every one is talkking about the their issue with SMK or the boat tails being a POS it may soon be resolved hopefully (Which in all my 303's the SMK's work well) the new round is on the block it is a .311 174gn HPFB I have only really done very little work up with this as I went to the state shoot with a tried & proven load with 174 SMK's using my as issued No.4 I also won the as issued event so they do work. I was not going to go there with an untested zero I have only tried groupings compared to the SMK. If your pushed buy the Hornady 150gn Flat Base Soft Point at .312" which your local should have or one close by use the inter-net to find some they go pretty good to @400m I finished 2nd 2 years running in state shoots previously 2008 & 2009 using them the K-31 was just too good over the 2 consecutive days.

These bullets are made by The Bullet Factory look them up get in contact with them and see if you can get some they are .42c/AU each I would say international postage will be pretty stiff I brought 840 of them and it came in 2 packets that were quite weighty.

I have a sniper shoot tomorrow using my 47C T and will report back how they go but like I said I have done diddly squat load development save for the same weight of 2209 I use for the SMK's and have set the ogive to the same as a MKVII round and crimp they just fit in the mag. You also have to allow for PWF when shooting

I have enclosed the pics of the only 25yd targets I have shot with PWF and this is all I have done no 100, 200, 300 up to 600 so cannot judge from the groups to be honest I may have to tweak the charge/jump/crimp/primers yet but for now just going with what I have used in the past with the SMK's then go from there its all I can do for now some one over east may have done more than I with these new projies.

Postscript ~ something more important came up so did not go shooting but we have a sight in day this coming w/end so will try for that one with the Bullet Factory loads.

LE barrels measure anywhere between .310 and 317. worn ones are even worse.

that being said, I recall worf ammo is not just bad but dangerous. Didn't Cabella's or one of the other big box stores pull the wolf 303 ammo dut to serios quality flaws?

Update

Shot the Wolf 174 Grain ammo in my other No4 Mk1 yesterday and P14. Both shot the ammo fine. Pointy end through target first.

So my conclusion is that this ammo is acceptable for 4 groove barrels, but not for two groove barrels. At least that is a key difference between the my LB and other two .303 rifles.

Since SGA ammo sells this stuff for $8 per box, I will buy more, but not use it in my LB

Attached is target from yesterday. Some of the round are Herters, which also shot well. But 13 of the holes shown are the rest of the box of Wolf that keyholed in my LB.

Slugging the bore would be key to sorting this out.

Milsurp attachment manager insisted on turning my pic when I uploaded it. Rounds are actually at six o'clock, almost dead on point at of aim at 50 yards.

That's fine, I mean the LB 2 groove needs slugged to find out what bore diameter. If you use a buckshot ball that's oversize and tap it through this mystery will be solved... Also, look closely at the muzzle to see that there's no bulge there, even if just slightly or at one side.

Jim, I apologize if you felt it was personal - it was not intended to be so. And you are quight right, I do tend to get a bit long-wiinded. Maybe a misguided attempt to explain exactly what is going on (or might be going on). So I'll try to put it more succintly:

Boattails tend to lose neck guidance well before the bullet is engraved in the rifling. This shows up very frequently in old milsurps that were never made to SAAMI or CIP standards, indeed often before these standards were established. So only direct measurement of the rifle concerned will establish whether or not this effect is a likely cause of poor performance.

Oversize bore and/or throat erosion from cordite. Slug the barrel to see if it's oversized. My money is on the cordite throat erosion. We've beat this subject to death here and it's either one, the other or a combination of both. I've done a lot of shooting with 2 groove barrels in mostly Long Branch and Savage rifles and I can find no difference whatsoever in a 2, 5, or 6 groove barrel. The MoD would have never accepted the two groove barrel if it was inferior in any way.
