The provider had blocked weapons and violence access to the net as one of the "default settings" and once this had been switched to allow access everything worked fine.

I don't think this is Surpmil's issue, but it's an excellent point. I had forgotten that a LOT of internet providers and also private companies through their internal firewalls, block access to gun related sites such as ours.
