model 98 Extractor problem

Hi Guys,

I have a numbers matching 98 bring back that the extractor doesn't want to engage the cartridge rim. The bolt without a cartridge works just fine but when a cartridge is inserted, the bolt will not fully close and the extractor will not engage.
It feels as the cartridge rim is hitting the face of the extractor and not sliding past the rim of the cartridge. If I put a cartridge in the end of the bolt and under the extractor , the bolt closes just fine.

Any thoughts.

With Mausers the bolt needs to pick the cartridge out of the magazine, so if you are just dropping a round onto the magazine follower and not pushing it into teh magazine well that is exactly what happens.

A M98 extractor should climb over the rim of a chambered cartridge and close and extract if the bevel at the front of the claw is contoured correctly and the foot is allowed to disengage from the guide slot on the bolt body.

Probably not. You'll likely break the extractor...

Thats why the front of the extractor is chamfered and inherently part of the m98 design, unlike a 03 or m17. See Kuhnhausen's book

Your welcome BAR, no disrespect. The OP mentioned a bring back that was a magazine fed rifle, not a single shot action where the extractor doesn't work with the magazine. I should not have extrapolated my thoughts from the question that was originally asked.

They are magazine fed, not ideal for single shot. Guys used to swap out the German extractors and install Argentine extractors. That will allow for single shot feeding.

Something else that is interesting about m98 extractors that most do not hear a lot of mention about is that the front of the groove between the bolt lugs that the guide foot rotates in is beveled on the front to exert more pressure on the rim the harder the bolt is pulled rearward. If there is no deflection in the hook or claw when a dummy is rotated off the face of the bolt, its going to be a little rough closing when the cartridge breaks over or not as smooth as it can be even when fed from the magazine. I wont speculate if all 98's are like that but the two remaining ones I own are. I'll have to look at a PH and m48 that I have to see if they are like that, the 48 action is rough as a cobb and the PH will not close on a chambered round now that I think about it.
