Star Gage stamp location
Hello Milsurp Friends,
Am looking to buy an M1903 barrel....SA 10-30. It has what appears to be a Star Gage stamp at about 11 o'clock. There is also the alpha-numeric stamp on top of the barrel just ahead of the rear sight collar.
Is the stamp at the muzzle ALWAYS at 6 o"clock or may it be located at different clock positions?
Thanks,
Jason

In The Springfield 1903 Rifles, Brophy says the mark is always at 6 o'clock. The mark is pictured on page 207 and it is not very similar to
the one pictured in your photo.

STar Gage Stamp location
I have the Brophy Book, but I do not have it with me and am away from home. Looking at the full enlargement of the pic I posted, there seems to be a mark at the 6 0'clock position of the muzzle. I could just be worn? Also, there is the alpha-numeric stamp on top of the barrel in the proper location. Is there any evidence of star gaged barrels being counterfeited? Why? Other than the mark(s) we really have no way to prove/disprove a SG'd barrel.

markings on my SA 7-29 National Match barrel
I have some photos of my Springfield 1903 which is in the 1.37 mil serial number range with a SA 7-29 NM barrel.
Besides the "star" stamp on the muzzle, there is also a heat lot code and most important is the marking from the bore gage record cardAttachment 81507Attachment 81508Attachment 81509Attachment 81510Attachment 81511

I would guess that barrel in not quite right. JB or Rick would help.

The marks at 11 O'clock could just be stray marks from something else.........not necessarily a SG mark or even an attempt to counterfeit a SG mark. There IS something at 6 O'clock
that looks like, possibly, a worn mark. But there is also the alphanumeric stamped at the correct area. There is also a "P" proof mark on the underside of the barrel, just forward of the rear sight collar.
After 80+ years, much could happen; and the barrel is not currently installed on a rifle.

the 1930 barrel your looking at, has been faked to be a star gauged barrel.

Nothing accidental or slipshod about Springfield National Match program. They represented the best of the best. Barrel isn't correct, no accident at SA.

This barrel sold on Ebay for $392!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I bid for a while, but it got too high for the project I am assembling. I found an SA/9-42 barrel in Very good condition for about half that price, which also included the rear base and a rear sight. Thanks for participating in my thread!
