If it was rusty they did a great job of cleaning it up. It doesn't seem to be cut.
What I just read was the asterisk stopped being used in the 1920s to indicate rust in the bore. By the 1930s it was an inspection mark but was not a mark of rust. Can anyone else confirm this.
