You're thinking that after trimming, he case mouth chamfered with the Lee tool and made this mark by hand?

Well Chubbs, did you trim, chamfer and reload these cases? Are you using a Lee deburring tool?

I had the exact same thing Saturday.
2 shells out of 30 show that line at a tad less than 24 mm from the base of the shell.
One is like a scratch and the nail snaps at it, the other one is a simple sign.
I use only the Lee Reloader, so no trouble with presses, wrongly set dies etc. Also the chamfer tool is innocent. It does not reach that low.
And my loads are quite mild. 140 grs of N140 behind a 180 grs FMJBT ball. Large rifle primer and oal of 78 mm.
Nothing strange or hot.

Hi Guys

Went to the range and fired some from the same batch, no mark. I have't tried reloading them yet but I am beginning to think Dick has probably hit the mark. Unfortunately can't verify this until end of the week.

Exactly BAR if you hold the LEE deburring tool at an angle to "help" it chamfer the outside of the case mouth that is exactly the mark you get, I suspect other deburring tools will give the same result.

How do I know? I did it myself very early on in my case prep, old, crotchety and wanted to get it done faster.

You're correct of course, I've done it myself. I have one of those, prefer the RCBS tool though. I'd forgotten about that.

Now if we can only hear back from the OP on this...

If they aren't there when you fire then it's the case mouth chamfer action that does it...

I can now confirm that the line is indeed made by the Lee Chamfering tool.
