original flip sight, serial # range?

M1 Carbine Flip Sight Inland (early w/serifed "S") - eBay (item 120405544392 end time Apr-19-09 18:05:00 PDT)

What Inland serial numbers would the serif S sight be found in? Does this one appear to be authentic? Thanks for any info.

My understanding is the first few thousand Inlands had sights marked like that, but Chris is the guru on early Inlands here. He'll chime in when he gets time.

I have serious doubts about the authenticity of that flip sight. I have one just like it and I know it is fake. The S (with serifs) flip sight is only seen on the first few thousand carbines on Inland production.

Very sad it sold in the first place. The seller made a huge profit for a $15 repro and a little time in his garage, but that's how things are today. The internet has been great, but it has ruined the hobby. Too many photos posted of real parts and what makes them authentic, too many Charlestons watching people spending money on real and fake parts and seeing what George has gotten by with.

A better question would be; if such a part DID appear as a lone part on ebay, would people know it was real? If it were an extreme rarity, it stands to reason that very few, if any, people would have viewed enough of them to discern a real from a fake.

edit: given the number of times rifles were rearsenaled during WWII, a rare flip very well could have survived (prior to being replaced by an adjustable) on a rifle that a current owner would want to swap to make it "correct". With that in mind, a lone part like that could very well appear on ebay all on it's lonesome. Food for thought.
