Correctimondo Peter,
It was retained really in the hope that it could decoke the GPMG when needed as a number two. Yes there were adequate means in the GYMPY cleaning kit to do its own thing, but the gauze did have its uses being rigid and all, and got6 to some hard places easier!!

the hardened edges. Not a lot of people knew about that. Another bit of useless information
I had noticed the colour variation in the gauze around the edges but hadn't realised that it was because the edges were hardened.

It was essential as I say, particularly on the GPMG, as that riggidity was helpful on lots of occasions, so am assuming thats why it was retained. Probably a decision by the SASC at Warminster!!!

Cleaning kit tin with gauze lips removed.
I came across this cleaning kit tin that has had it's gauze lips removed, inside of lid, to accommodate the gauze or not to in this case. I have noticed these before, minus the lips for the gauze, and had always assumed that they had fallen off or broken due to use. I hadn't realised that they had been deliberately removed until Peter said this was the case in Post 30. The contents of this tin is just as it came to me. Would this be for the Sterling or something other than the SLR because the little SLR combination type tool is not present?

The combi tool WOULD/should be present in that tin because without it the chamber brush is useless. If no chamber brush or combi tool then it's to be used for a SMG
