There should be an 'OI' in the channel inside the stock. You'll probably need to remove the camo paint to see anything on the outside of the stock grip.
Take a picture of the inside of the butt plate and post it. This will most likely determine it's authenticity.

Notice anything strange about the location of the barrel band retaining spring?

Not to mention the round head screw on the band or the rolocated hole for the catch or the permanently attached recoil check??
When they tell you to behave, they always forget to specify whether to behave well or badly!

I think it's plastic. The pistol grip and stock appear to be one piece. JMHO

Fulcrum28,
Don't take all the negative sounding comments to heart as hurtful, but you rifle is very sad because it could have been worth quite a bit if it had not been ruined as a collector by 'Bubba'. Sadly, your M1A1
has had a very hard life. The stock alone would have been worth more than the Winchester action. With the modifications done to the Winchester action it's collector value is minimal as well.
Shoot it and enjoy it for what it is.

Just wondering why the barrel band spring and the barrel band were modified?
Any ideas?
