Have you considered buying a Repro I cut Hi-wood stock?
You could stamp away on that and not ruin a collectible stock.....

Does anyone know the source of the black color on the stock near the butt plate in the OP's pictures? Have seen a few like this. Water? Oil?

Painter...would you be able to point me to a source for a repro I cut high wood stock ? I would certainly consider buying one and setting the original aside. M1A1fan , the stains perplex me. I thought about trying to bleach them out, but decided to leave them there for now.Am curious as to the cause of the stains at the butstock. My other Winchester has them as well.

So far I've only seen that black coloring on Winch carbines. Weird.

The one in the middle looks from here to be from water. It sat butt down without a butt plate on it in a damp environment.
The one on the right I can't tell.

I sort of agree, water or oil though, can't be sure. Oil will smell like oil.
