I have (had, one was sold) two RFI made No. 4 Ts of which both have the serial number this way on the front receiver ring. Both serials have a A prefix and a T suffix.

It would not let me attach the picture from my iPad, therefore now with some delay from the PC in my office.
Edit: as mentioned, I have a second one which has the markings applied exactly the same way. And the right side of the receiver ring bears the RFI 1962 (or kind of that) marking on both.
Special note: the "Geco" is the importer of these guns, and the small marking is the Belgian firing proof.

From what I've seen of the 4T's that ended up in India, those that were converted to Mk1/2 T were also renumbered as shown in MJ1's & Promo's photographs, & were also linished of all original markings & dates, with RFI 1962 or 63 stamped into the R side of the butt socket SMLE style. Those rifles that were never 'uprated' to Mk1/2 T's retained their original markings although they all seemed to get the 'Ishy screw' & many, though not all Mk1 rifles seem to have had the 'No4 Mk1' on the receiver side wall heavily overstamped by hand, making rather a mess. I have a BSA 43 rifle that I bought many years ago that is still in Mk1 T trim, & has also fortunately escaped the hand stamping. She's well used, but pretty honest, & cosmetically better than most Indian 4T's.

I restored an RFI No.4Mk.1/2T marked exactly as Roger states above last year.

I also have an Indian reworked BSA from 43 still with the original markings, so they also seem to be not uncommon.

The right price is the one that wins for you at auction or the one you are happy to pay to get what you want.
