If I read it correctly Lou, you are saying that there is too much gap between the rear pad and the body. - that we can see on the photo. I suspect that you have not collimated or rotated the telescope to get the tip of the pointer , the optical axis of the telescope aligned with the mechanical axis of the telescope.
Or, alternatively - or both - you need to swing the rear of the telescope to the right so that the rear of the bracket sits closer to the rifle. You can do this by carefully filing the inside rear of the front pad to swing the bracket to the right at the rear.
You really should be doing this work with the rifle stripped down. It will be much easier!
