Savage Check...
I'm looking at a Savage rifle that is in really good condition. The owner claims it to be unissued, but I find that doubtful... The wood looks to be something other than walnut and the rear sight is wrong, but my real question centers around the cocking piece...
I've never seen one like this on a Savage. Can anyone verify if they ever produced cocking pieces of this type?
Thanks.

Yes. That is an early button style cocking piece found on early production Long Branch, Savage, Fazakerly and BSA No 4's. If its original to the rifle, it should have a squared "S" on it somewhere. Doubtful its unissued; the wood looks like later Beechwood. Savages came with American birch.

Also, did Savage use brass butt plates?

Rear sight is very late as the peep hole diameter is larger than early sights.

It's a jungle carbine sight... If I get the rifle I'll replace it.

More than it's worth... But I'm still thinking about simply because I want at least one pretty Lee Enfield.
