Jim, I think I found mention of these in War Baby awhile back. Almost seems like it was in the descriptions or pictures covering all the ways used of preserving and "canning" of the Carbines after the War. Doubt I could find it again now! - Bob

War baby shows it from a dealers table claiming to be for a M1a1 which will not work.

Quiz2 - The Carbine Collector's Club
I have heard a few say they came in on bavarian returns and CMP
was removing and tossing in trash. I do not believe thses are USGI as stated in description
I would like one for my collection, but not at that price.

Jim, Check the War Baby series pages 539-540. I believe the answer is shown there. I see a "mix-up" in the captions though, and can't find corrections for them in the latest book.

Oil retainer
I read someware that these were used on the M1A1
to stop the oiler from rattling when the leather of the cheek pad softened up

So, has the CCNL's ever discussed the oiler retainers used in the "canning" program referenced in 'War Baby Comes Home' pp. 539-540? Or, are they something different? - Bob

Looks like a handy way to keep the oiler with the rifle if you don't use a sling...

Bob, There was what I believe to be a trade magazine that published an article about the canning a short time after it happened. The newsletters published some articles based on that information in the 80's. Later Larry Ruth had submitted some more information that I believe he obtained from the Springfield Armory and/or Ordnance files.
If you look at the first few refinements the slings and oilers were either on the stock with sling or in a container attached to the bottom of the rack. The picture in WB shows the parts laid out with mention of clips. I think the newsletter and WB differ on what pictures are shown with the for that setup in the rack.
In WB3 there is a set of pictures that should have been on that page in WB2.
The newsletter and as far as I can see WB do not address the clips other then the caption under the photo. The same caption is used on the next page.
Looking at the pictures in WB it appears that the clips shown might be rectangular shaped or a box, there appears to be a distinct bend in the clip. The one on auction as those I posted above have a soft curve.
I guess until someone comes across a can of carbines or more photos surface we will not know what those clips truly look like or how they were used
