CMP Stocks
Good Morning,
This is my first post but have been reading and learning about the 03 for awhile. Anyway I have a 1903 Remington Modified and want to put a C stock on it and eventually turn it into a vintage sniper so I can shot at Perry. Does anyone have any experience with the 1903 stocks coming from the CMP
? And what finish should I put on it?

For one they aren't a drop in, you'll need to inlet your action to the stock. Raw linseed oil
is appropriate to apply. Boiled linseed can also be used it's just not authentic but nobody can tell the difference if you lay two stocks side by side.

The CMP
stocks are some what "thinner" than OEM. Not a bad thing as trigger purchase (for me any way) is easier.
I replace the brass rear action screw bushing with a steel one.
Removing some wood at the top rear of the action will save chipping of the stock. Eighth of an inch works.
Some of them do not have the front action lug milled properly. Check for clearance so as not to break of the wood behind it.
I brush clear urethane on the inside of it. Really seals them up.

If it is an original Remington 1903 ( all correctly R marked parts with the correct stock ) I would leave it alone and find one that Bubba has worked on.

Thanks for the replies. No it is not sporterized it is an original 1903 built by Remington 12-42 with a 10-42 barrel. They call them modified because needed to get them out of the factory asap for the war effort, and had authorization to make changes to the design for a quick turn around and out the door for the troops and allies.

If original see post #4. Get a drill rifle from the CMP
and turn that into the "sniper".
