Smith and Wesson M&P or 1905 - Police Department Marked
Recently picked this up through an online auction out of Knoxville, TN. Just picked it up from my FFL and while it's not exactly Military, I thought you fellas would enjoy the history.
I certainly love the connection to my adoptive home and I'm happy to bring it back home.
I just filled out the paperwork for a history request which will go out tomorrow.
Enjoy!

I like it. Looks like it's in nice shape, and that lettering on the backstrap really makes it for me. Congrats.

The pictures didn’t actually show the writing, just mentioned it. I was basically flying blind and was very pleased! I really expected something like “SLPD” handstamped. This is so much cooler than that.
They must’ve spent a pretty penny to have all of their revolvers marked back in the day!

Very nice. I have seen a couple marked like that over the years. If it could only talk.

I'm wondering if it wasn't factory applied.
Any thoughts?

Just an update.
Firstly, wow! Mr. Jinks is on top of his stuff. This letter came blazing fast.
Now for the cool stuff:
That revolver was indeed factory marked. It left the factory on January 20, 1928, for a hardware store (Geller, Ward, Hasner) in St. Louis. It was in a shipment of 25 which were stamped with what you see above. The cost was a special police price of $19.37 each.
Awesome. Just, really cool!
