We were transported in enclosed "cattle" cars in basic and AIT. Civilian drivers who drove like "bats out of Hades" and slung us around in the back. If they ever missed a curve then we all would have been dead. Now they use buses.
When I was stationed at Ft. Lewis in the 70s, they used the cattle cars to transport us to field. One time we were being transported to the South Rainier Training area we passed through the small town of Yelm. As we went through the middle of town, we all started "mooing" loudly and kicking the sides. You should have seen the look on the residents faces.
