I have over 300 1898 + rifles chambered in 8x57mm . The groove size runs any where from .322 to .327 . All my Austo/ Hung rifles run large . With the larger grooves a flat base bullet will shoot much better that a boat tail . Will also can get better results by changing powder burn rates and muzzle velocities . Yes you can use the larger dia bullet , just work up your load . You will pick up some pressure and velocity with a .001 or .002 + jacketed bullet . If the loaded round will chamber with no resistance , you are good to go . The " case needing to expand to release the bullet " is not true . My tight neck bench rest target rifles have zero neck clearance . You can pull a bullet out by hand and the case neck does not expand to " release " it .Information
