"The Flyer"
Had the APRS in .308 Win out at the range today in Collie just getting rid of 40 rounds of non annealed cases so I can anneal them the same as the others I have loaded up.
The splatter target has a nice 4 shot group and the 3rd shot of that 5 shot string well it decided it does not want to be with the others as I have mentioned before in my groups.
Still the 4 shot group near the center of the target is fairly tidy was shot off a bi-pod with a rear squeeze bag (2 old socks full of garnet)
So I moved out to 200m shot 2 x 5 shotters one off a BR Rocksteady rest the other off the bi-pod both times using the rear squeeze bag the center circle is 25mm, the secondary holes are from the projectiles breaking up on the steel belt in the conveyor rubber the targets were staple through
I am pretty happy with it as I guess the neck tension was all over the place the rifle had already had 40 rounds prior to this session so was getting towards 80 rounds without a clean.
Again the flyer I know exactly where the shot will be when it feels like a crap release as the groups are strikingly similar with the fliers.
Still they are fairly tidy and good enough to put one in the boiler room of a porker the 168gn "A" Max is devastating on soft targets big exit holes. Cheers

Do you know which shot of the string ends up as the flyer? First shot, last shot or somewhere in the middle? Last shot could be a barrel heating/stock fitment issue. First shot could be a stock fitment pre barrel heating issue. Somewhere in the middle could be a you issue! Of course if these weren't hand loads then it could be an inconsistent neck pressure and/or powder charge and/or primer issue. Good luck figuring out. - Bill

Always could be too...doesn't slurr the shooter either, just a cabbage. I have a couple here to figure out myself.

I have a Remington 40X single shot rifle in 222 Rem cal, I turn the necks to .248 inch to fit the chamber, weigh the brass check the
primer hole, use benchrest primers etc. Most of the time when I get the flyer or two from a small group I change over to another
bullet and work up the loads. Oddly sometimes a flat base bullet will really make a small group
Try some different bullets with the same loading and see if the flyer is still in the group

I've tried the Match Seirra's in it but whilst it shot ok they don't get as good grouping as the A max and being a hunting rifle the full patch rounds pin hole I dumped a hopper lasered at 247mtrs fired 1 round from a clean cold bore shot with this rifle 2 weeks ago off a bi-pod on the dirt was pretty chilly as well about 7:30am the A Max dumped it like a lightning bolt. I know its me the rifle action has been blue printed with a match grade Kreiger barrel though all the rounds that I use in it now have been annealed before going through the neck sizer.
Just gotta get in the right head space.
