A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. If you read "The Washing of the Spears", by Desmond Morris, there are a few references to the mighty Martini Henry.

In the days of "proper" warfare, when a rifle was just a nifty, high-maintenance extension for a bayonet, (pretty much any time before 1940), and actual ammunition was a noisy inconvenience, the provision of adequate heat-shielding on the fore-ends was blithely ignored.

Troops in "interesting" postings were known to wrap green-hide around the fore-ends and barrels of their Martinis to ward off burns when things got "up close and personal" and the gentlemanly art of bayonet fighting came into play, or even to make them tolerable to hold after about ten round rapid.
