I did that to a wood stock and inserted a block to replace the hinge...like the original stocks. I used an M1 buttplate and it was nice and balanced.
In 1989 I found myself in GPC by change and as I walked in the door there were stocks in a cardboard barrel for sale. They had failed their redfurb program and were hard done by. I found a walnut M14stock and bought it for $4 USD, took it home and sanded it, oiled and it looked like a factory new. Nice and functional and clean...was on the gun when it sold.
