This must be bad. The 81's are there pointing that way, to cover something up front so this is an attack in the rear area. If the mortars are under attack, it smells like encirclement...not good...

Those trees may also affect the 81mm being faced the other way to counter the threat, one surmises they were set up in haste to do a fire mission and not put into a pit and now being exposed not able to be serviced due to enemy action one shot into the tube and they are OOA.

No, unless you were going to be there a long time we just set them up like that...a mortar pit is a huge undertaking. We set up on the edge of treelines regularly...
