SRS search on 1898 Krag 472932

Hello Milsurp Friends,

Could I please have some check SRS for 1898 Krag 472932?

I know it was made in 1898.

This is a cut down rifle to "School rifle" length, but the measurements are not correct.
Has a 23" barrel but the over-all stock length is 39 9/16" rather than the 38" of the PC/School/Short rifle

No hit in my SRS book. Carbines had a 22" barrel, right? That would explain the odd length woodwork... Made up by John Q Public...

Badly cut down and poorly crowned, this rifle was probably salvaged from parts and made up to make something out of it. Should be able to shorten things down and do it better. The muzzle crown also has to be turned down to accept the bayonet ring...and sight mounted...bore doesn't look good either...unless it's good, then why?

Oh I don’t think it’s all that bad, Jim.
Not what I’d ever do to one of course but I’d think hard about it if I saw it in a gun rack.
Neat enough to pay $300 or so.
A little crown work and a new sight base would make it pretty nifty.

While originally a model 1898 rifle, the sn indicates that it was probably originally built at Springfield Armory in late 1903. I like it. A good gunsmith ought to be able to fix you right up.

As I said, I had one almost the same. Mine had an original sight re-set on the barrel and the guy that did it was pretty good, it looked good. I had to turn the muzzle by hand, you can stick this one through the lathe and turn the crown to correct the length and crown and do the muzzle to accept a bayonet all at once. If you work with the original carbine length you can take it all from there. You only need to move the front band back a half inch or so...redrill the transverse screw. Perhaps use a 1903 front sight.

Am wanting to have all that done, but I want to use a correct front sight. S&S and Numrich have repro bases and blades. I want to be able to mount a bayonet. WHy? IDK! I just want correct dimensions to do it. I sent you a PM asking for gunsmith recommendation for the work you describe. The rifle is at my 01-FFL, who is willing to ship it to a smith and have it returned. I want to have the work done and complete so that I can enjoy the rifle when I come home in October.

The sight goes on a flat, simple mill job I think. I sent a return to you for a couple gunsmiths... It COULD turn out very neat...of course you want to mount a blade. I went to great lengths to procure and do that.
